Deep-Fried Oreo Recipe – Chocolate Treats with a Crispy Twist

Let’s set aside all dietary recommendations for today because we’re diving into a recipe fit for American fairs: deep-fried Oreos. Soft, sweet, and melt-in-your-mouth, they transform into a bite of pure pleasure.

Recipe for 15 Oreos

Preparation Time: 5 min

Cooking Time: 5 min

Total Recipe Time: 10 min

Ingredients for Deep-Fried Oreos

  • 1 1/2 cups (180g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup (230ml) milk
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • Confectioners’ sugar for dusting

It’s been a while since we’ve made deep-fried Snickers. I know many of you love Oreos, so I thought I’d whip up something special for the summer, just like in the USA.

As I’ve mentioned before, at fairs held in each state, there’s always at least one stand serving up every imaginable fried delight. It’s become so popular that there’s a sort of competition between states to see who can offer the craziest fried food.

Today, however, we’re keeping it simple by frying Oreos. You might say that’s already plenty greasy and caloric, and you’d be right! But I’m not suggesting you eat all the ones you fry – one or two will do.

The trick to this recipe is to make the batter thick enough to stick to the cookie and coat it well when it goes into the fryer. Also, don’t overcrowd the Oreos in the fryer, or they’ll stick together and you won’t be able to separate them.

For a bit of history, this recipe is relatively recent, as it first appeared in California fairs in 2002. Charlie Boghosian created it as an alternative to more “traditional” fair foods, and it’s been a huge hit ever since. He’s since opened a restaurant and continues to tour fairs: http://www.chickencharlies.com/
